As a trade unionist, I’m proud of the victories our movement has won over the years. The weekend, the right to paid holidays and rights for those who work part time were not bestowed upon us by bosses but a result of tireless campaigning by working people.
That’s why I fully support USDAW’s campaign to give shop workers a decent rest on New Year’s Day. I agree with them that workers deserve time with their friends and family during the busy festive period. USDAW’s own surveys suggest only 3% of Scottish retail workers are happy to work on 1st January.
The union has secured a Scottish Government consultation into large stores closing on New Year’s Day. This is a real chance to secure a decent break for Scottish retail workers. If you live or work in Scotland, please add your views to the consultation by Tuesday. You can participate in the consultation here.
