Former MP and Labour candidate for Cunninghame North Katy Clark has called on the Scottish Government to step up and support local media by continuing rates relief after the end of March;
“Access to good quality information is more important than ever during the Coronavirus pandemic.
It is obvious that both paper sales and advertising will have taken a big hit over the last year. Rates relief for media companies is due to be cut off at the end of March.
A free press is essential in a democratic society. Print press has been under massive pressure in recent decades and the pandemic risks the closure of much of what we have left.
I very much hope the Scottish Government think again and step in with a package of support including rates relief for our local and national press in these unprecedented times.”
